SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
Built-in obsolescence is a thing of the past. In its place: built-in adaptability. One Haworth Center incorporates everything we have learned about environmental stewardship to create a healthy, cost-effective environment that showcases our organic workspace solutions.
One Haworth Center combines inherent, functional purpose with striking design that celebrates the beauty of nature and inspires everyone who enters to seek new and innovative ways to conserve the natural environment.
In addition to offering LEED office products, we’ve constructed our headquarters using the principles of sustainability that Haworth endorses:
- During deconstruction of the old headquarters building and the construction of the new One Haworth Center, 99% of the old headquarters was recycled within the local community or onsite
- Benchmarks for LEED®-NC Gold certification have been achieved. Our experience can be seen as a “how-to” on the challenges and rewards of pursuing LEED® certification, and offers a wealth of ideas to help others create sustainable offices.
- Our three-story, ebony oak entry wall is made of wood recovered from the U.S. and Canadian waterways, so none is harvested from old-growth forests.
- Our integrated, adaptable workspaces use recycled materials for seating fabrics, and panel systems, and include moveable walls that create negligible or no waste when re-arranging space. This adds up to an eco-friendly workplace.
- Energy use is expected to remain at pre-renovation levels, even though the new building is 20% larger.
- Raised access floors house the cabling, power, and air systems. Under-floor air provides better air quality than forced air from the ceiling, and enables us to reconfigure workspaces and move walls without creating waste.
- The green roof is planted in sedum, a flowering groundcover used to prevent rain water run off, lower energy costs, support wildlife, and increase the life of the roof. The trays in which the sedum is planted are made from recyclable materials, and are easily moved to adapt to Haworth’s future needs.
